Shooting on the links….
“DOWN SWINGS FOR DISABILITIES 2010″ took place on Friday, August 20, 2010 and was the first of 2 events I covered that day–made for quite a full day.
I had been asked to provide coverage for the event by my friend and frequent shooting partner Brian Morgan–a fine Atlanta sports photographer -who was unavailable to provide coverage as he had done in 2009. Up at dawn, I was at the course- Smoke Rise Golf and Country Club – as the sun was coming through the fog and mist (or, is that the smoke…). Golf carts were lined up and ready for golfers to arrive. Stone Mountain was in the distance. Balls were in small pyramids on the driving range. The leader board was in position. All in all, a great start to a worthy event.
The golf tournament is a primary fundraiser of the DDD Foundation –an organization that provides dental treatment to the developmentally disabled. “The DDD Foundation, Inc. is committed to promoting and maintaining good oral health for patients with developmental disabilities. Founded as a non-profit organization in 1999, the Foundation supports a dental clinic that solely treats patients having developmental disabilities. The clinic opened in May 2002 and it is the only clinic of its kind in the Atlanta metro area. With a dedicated team of professionals trained in serving patients with special needs, the clinic serves patients with developmental disabilities including autism, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis. The DDD Foundation’s primary goal is to provide excellent and accessible dental care for a population that often faces enormous barriers to affordable care.”
The format was a scramble but they all were competing as if it was Sunday in Augusta and the Masters Green Jacket was on the line. I heard one foursome commenting that “…there is no second place…”
My job was fairly straight forward-shoot each of the groups in front of the leader board where their names were in lights; shoot the cart partners; then hand off the files to be printed; grab a golf cart and hit the links for some action shots…just another day at the office….
It was a lot of fun and being part of the cause was reward enough–no green jacket for me!!! It was fun, though, seeing my logo up on the board as a sponsor right along side Bank of America and Kroger and…you get the picture. Right up there with the big guys!!!
It was even fun to be on a golf course again….I gave up golf awhile ago–wasn’t it Twain who said golf was” a walk in the park ruined…”
